The Atlantic Dip

Halifax bridge after the dip with no kite.
Rode with Bruce about 25km to the ocean in downtown Halifax. It is nice to have finished! Go fly a kite ( I had save the last dollar store kite to fly the last day and it was gone inside of ten minutes!!) flew the koop.

Halifax Metro

Rode out from top drawer hospitality at Mike n Maryellen's (dinner to die for n Bkfst with back bacon n a good visit). Photo of our bikes outside of the house at departure time. Went about 110km to Bruce's house in blue sky n sunshine (yippee!!).

Warm n cozy at Truro

Flowers still blooming along the road.
Rode about 70km. Dinner with Mike n MaryEllen.

Wet day to Pictou

Rode about 70km to the Wood Islands Ferry n got a room in Pictou. Worst weather day that I rode in since the beginning for wet n wind. I have been very lucky. Phone camera wouldn't operate with wet gloved fingers so photos of/from the ferry.

Charlottetown(Cornwall)

We rode from the cottage (photo of the plaque on it's wall) where we stayed to the bridge and waited a while for the truck to haul our bikes n gear across the bridge. Then had lunch and a very damp (hvy drizzle) ride for a couple of hours followed by a couple of hours with no drizzle and some hills to create body heat from peddling!! Lotta spuds n red soil.

The Ferry is gone

The Confederation Bridge in the distance! Two swans in Sackville(home of Mt Allison Unversity).
The sun, which I had not seen for several days.
Low tide on a creek/river.
Got to Cape Tormentine campground and met up with Bruce(we met at cubs around 1960). This is where the ferry used to go from over to PEI. Rode about 115/120km and onto one gravel country road(High Marsh Road) that surprised me by having a covered bridge on it - photo too. No flat tires - stayed off the Trans Cda Hwy where steel belt tire from transport trucks abound.

Moncton

Another long story. Flat tires until I honestly ran out of ammo(tubes). I took a taxi 125km to a bike shop here. I had pulled a large staple out of the rear tire and put in the spare tube which would not pump up so thinking I may have pinched the tube installing it, I patched the tube I had taken out and put it in. That tube would not pump up either so my goose was cooked. It was very cold and when the taxi arrived the drizzle started. The repair tech at the bike shop found a little piece of pin wire in the sidewall of the tire that would puncture any tube being installed. I had chkd but didn't find that one. On from here tomorrow to meet Bruce Gauthier, my friend from grade 7. We will ride across PEI and then head for Halifax where he lives as the last ferry to where I want to get to in NFLD leaves Sept 27 and I can't get to Sydney by then. Photo of break down site. NB has been cruel with sooo many flat tires!!

Unexpected 2nd night Oromocto

Long story short - slept in after 2 days into the wind. Bkfst n then patch tube from yesterday's flat on trailer. Pack up n notice rear bike tire is flat. Call desk asking for late chk out. Patch tube from rear tire n depart into stronger(than the last 2 days) head wind. Ride about 10km n rear tire goes flat again??? Decide that I'm unwilling to try the next 30km to the next motel with all of these patched and punctured tubes. Call a cab bk to Oromocto to Cdn Tire n buy new tubes. Change rear tube n discard old one. Now it is after 3pm n I decide in the pouring rain n strong wind that it could turn into a huge mistake starting east again. Call a cab bk to the Day's Inn for night number 2. No photos again but almost took one of sign in pub where I had dinner tonight.
"Warning -
Alcohol can cause pregnancy". photo is tire tracks at Horseshoe Bay long ago.

Wind again

Made about 90km into head wind. Had flat tire on the trailer and had to take the tire off of the rim to get the little sharp piece out that punctured the tube. No photos. Looked for moose(many warning signs to watch out for them) along the highway. Tomorrow will go better!!

Tent is a winner

Got to Meductic (99km) into a head wind) and no answer at the only accommodation listed in town (a BnB). Photos of Mother Nature telling Sully not to dally, the last big hill to climb to Meductic and the tent. Cold riding and tenting.

Friday 20 September 2013

Two flat tires!!

There were several cemeteries with so many flowers decorating the grave sites that I wondered if there was an annual celebration day recently to honor the dead?
I made another mistake! I was in a hurry to change the flat and escape the Mosquitos and black flies so I didn't check the tire to see what caused the flat. Two hours later just entering Perth - Andover the tire was flat again. I rode on secondary highways to get away from the heavy traffic on the Trans Cda Hwy but the roads were much rougher and a lot had no shoulders so I will go back to T C Hwy. made about 120km. I walked the bike about 4km to the nearest motel and checked in. Photos of St John R and the falls at Grand Falls.

Wednesday 18 September 2013

New Brunswick - I'm here!

The real name of this town!!
Saw a live garter snake today. Rode about 10km on a gravel bike path(photo). Took last pic of St L river(very wide near the mouth). Rode about 135km to Edmundston.

Riviere du Loup

Quebec has the best cycling routes (Route Verte) and designated paths of all the provinces so far!! Note - green sign with arrow pointing left below it.
Turn S from here into N B. I entered Quebec a bit apprehensive but found the people helpful with my minimal French language. Made about 140km. Leaving the big river.

Monday 16 September 2013

Too cold today

Finished about 135km in Montagny n doing laundry now. Not v exciting. Hoping to get some dinner n hit the hay. Saw 2 bald eagles this morning while I was having breakfast. Always a good thing to see. Photos of leaves changing colors and a container ship going upriver past Quebec City. Bridge(one of two side by side). Note Coast Guard ship as well.

Sunday 15 September 2013

There r a lot of frogs in Quebec (I see at least 100 dead ones a day along the road)

Looks like an awful lot of homes use wood (exclusively?) for heat.
Saw a red fox today (more road kill). Got v lucky n found a B n B about 7:30 pm tonight as it was getting toward dark. I hear a bit of rain out there now! Views of the St Lawrence off n on through the day. Got in about 150km today.

Saturday 14 September 2013

Sorel - Tracy tonight

Northern most Aderondack Mtn, I think. SE of Montreal.
Had a bit of trouble navigating S around Montreal. Got a bit lost once or twice. Wound up riding up the Richealeau R on it's E side to here, where it flows into the St Lawrence. Photos of Val n I.

Friday 13 September 2013

Broussard PQ

Short day with cool temps (jacket on for first time as far bk as I remember). About 95 km. saw a woodchuck eating grass beside the road. Practicing my poor French.

Bainsville On

War of 1812
Wide shoulders and bike paths make for a fine days riding. Saw a big bull frog (road kill), a bald eagle n an osprey flying with a fish nearly too heavy for it. Met a couple riding a tandem bike who r riding until the end of October (south from Owen Sound to Alabama - reverse of the slaves escape route going north).

Morrisburg Ont

The end of Lk Ont below the boat.
Had a fine ride yesterday of about 125km on mostly wide shoulders and a bike path for part of it. Val and I departed from our friends home in Kingston after 2 days of RnR! Saw a Bald eagle, a couple of swans and a blue heron along the way. Photos in Kingston and coast guard boat on the St Lawrence R.

Monday 9 September 2013

Kingston (sorta)

Arrived in Kingston for a couple of days off with Miss Val. We r staying with friends Rod n Briget here. Had my second flat tire on the trailer. Got photo of Hurcules aircraft at Trenton Air Base.

Saturday 7 September 2013

Brighton Ont

Farms, some with markets selling veg n fruit, and Rolling hills n a short period of light drizzle. I didn't get soaked but was glad to have the rain suit available the two times I put it on. Batteries were running low so I stopped at 4pm for an early pasta dinner. Photo of what it looked like this morning as I was packing to leave (went down the street to Tim's for coffee n a Bkfst sandwich n it had pretty much quit). Photos are not in the photo library so Mayb it is full??

Friday 6 September 2013

Whitby On

Passed thru downtown/lakeshore Toronto today on what I believe is day 45 of riding. Making way and getting a bit lost once or twice is part of the big city adventure. Made a meager 100km today? Mistake took me on gravel path! Below TO skyline from the west below 3 masted schooner in Downtown TO Harbour
First sight of Lk Ont
